Bentley celebrates centenary year at Monza race

Bentley Motorsport is heading back to Europe for the first round of the 2019 Blancpain GT Series Endurance Cup at Monza (12-14 April). And in the year the British brand celebrates its centenary, a British driver will make his debut for Bentley Team M-Sport in the second generation Continental GT3 at the historic Italian circuit.

In car number 108, renumbered this year from 08 to mark the company’s 100th anniversary, Alex Buncombe (GB) will line up alongside long-time Bentley Boys, Andy Soucek (ES) and Maxime Soulet (BE). The British racing driver brings with him extensive experience in endurance racing and is a former Blancpain Endurance Series Champion.

Buncombe follows in the footsteps of Lucas Ordóñez (ES) and Markus Palttala (FI), who made their Continental GT3 debuts in March in the Intercontinental GT Challenge. All three drivers are gaining vital acclimatisation time behind the wheel as part of the team’s preparations for the 24 Hours of Spa, where they will compete as part of a four-car line-up.

Buncombe commented: “As an English driver, to be given the opportunity to race for such a legendary British brand is a truly great privilege and honour, even more so in such a special year. I’m really looking forward to teaming up with Andy and Maxime, and benefiting from their extensive experience with the team and car.”

Unchanged for its third consecutive race in 2019, after competing at Bathurst, Australia, and Laguna Seca, USA, the team for the number 107 car once again features Steven Kane (GB), Jordan Pepper (ZA) and Jules Gounon (FR).

Brian Gush, Bentley’s Director of Motorsport, said: “In Bentley’s centennial year, it’s exciting for us to be back racing in Europe. One year on from the new Continental GT3’s competitive debut at Monza, we’ve made great strides with its development.”

As we head into the Blancpain GT Series season, and with our eyes on Spa, we’re also in a strong position with our driver roster. We will continue to share out opportunities for our new drivers to gain experience, and intend to manage this on a race by race basis.”

The opening round of the Blancpain GT Series Endurance Cup, the 3H of Monza, takes place on Sunday 14 April at the Autodromo Nazionale Monza.
