Bentley and Electrification: The Journey Starts Here

In 2020 we announced our “Beyond100” strategy, a roadmap for how we will become the world’s leading sustainable luxury mobility brand. It builds on everything we have achieved so far and commits us to an even more ambitious, electrified future – one that continues to deliver the thrilling performance, incredible luxury and breathtaking design that has always kept us ahead of the competition.

As part of this strategy, we have made a series of bold commitments:

  • We will completely transition to an electric-powered offering by 2030
  • This will start with the launch of Bentley’s first end-to-end carbon-neutral luxury electric car in 2025.
  • In 2026, our entire range will be available only as a battery-powered or plug-in hybrid vehicle
  • By 2030, every single Bentley will be powered exclusively by electric motors and on-board electric batteries.

THE ROUTE SO FAR

Bentley is already tapping into the electrifying potential of progressive, sustainable mobility. In 2017, the launch of the EXP 12 Speed 6e concept made our intent clear: to create the world’s first true luxury electric sports car. The launch of the Bentayga Hybrid in 2018 then demonstrated that our vision was far more than just talk – combining phenomenal performance and breathtaking design with future-focussed technology in the world’s first luxury plug-in hybrid SUV. 

The EXP 100 GT concept, created in celebration of our centenary, presented an even more radical vision for the future of the automotive world, powered by autonomous electric driving and enhanced with AI technology. Our lead in the industry was consolidated with the launch of the new Bentayga Hybrid in 2020, which underlined our commitment to create a sustainable future that didn’t compromise on the performance or design that elevates every Bentley. This reignited the industry with our passion for forward-facing automotive technology and the possibilities they presented, from enhanced My Bentley Connected Services, to intelligent – and sustainable – navigation solutions.

FUTURE-FACING FEATURES

Our focus has always been on intelligent and intuitive tools that add to the luxurious experience that a Bentley offers, with an ambition to reimagine the relationship between driver and car. This can be seen in the My Bentley Connected Car services that are available on the new Bentayga Hybrid. Accessed via the My Bentley app, they give you access to vital information and controls that are designed to make every journey, smart, safe and convenient – such as the option to remotely manage the charge status of your Hybrid.

Another example of this approach can be seen in the new Hybrid’s dynamic balance of E Motor and V6 combustion engine, a fusion of vehicle with technology. When driving in Hybrid mode, the most sustainable power source is chosen by the Intelligent Navigation system, minimising emissions and maximising range.

THE EVOLUTION OF POWER AND LUXURY

Already, we are looking to the next chapter of progressive luxury mobility as we seek to follow through on our commitment to transition to an all-electric range from 2026 onwards. After the success of the new Bentayga Hybrid, the challenge we face next is to create a vehicle that is powered purely by electricity, without compromising on the values that have kept Bentley ahead of the competition throughout our history. Our OCTOPUS development platform is yielding innovations in this field and beyond, tasked with delivering a breakthrough in e-axle electric powertrains – and doing so with a recyclable system that removes the need for rare-earth materials.

However, the challenges of tomorrow are likely to transform the automotive world just as electrification is today. The EXP 100 GT concept, for example, offers a glimpse into a future that could draw power from sources that, for now, remain untapped: light and air.

WHAT NEXT?

Our “Beyond100” strategy is the boldest step we have taken on our journey towards electrification. Its goals are ambitious and, when they are achieved, they will change the world for the better. In 2020, we announced the launch of the EXP-14 Electric Potential concept car. This Battery Electric Vehicle (BEV) car is to be an exciting platform on which the brand will test the latest developments on Bentley’s path to electrification. From putting the electric motor through its paces, to testing battery and charging technologies, this car will represent the rapidly changing – and advancing – face of Bentley’s future.
